Extract from Rust Report - Bluetooth-enabled devices double

Strategy Analytics has asserted that the market for Bluetooth-enabled devices grew to more than 272 million units in 2005, twice the number of units shipped globally in 2004. To date, Bluetooth for hands-free cell phones has driven the adoption of Bluetooth but, in the future, more users are expected to want Bluetooth-enabled cell phones and headphones for listening to high quality stereo music. According to Chris Taylor, director of the Strategy Analytics RF & Wireless Component Service (RFWC), Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR) has maintained a strong lead in the Bluetooth chip market by aggressively reducing cost, power consumption and footprint, while increasing data rates and adding features to its chips. This has allowed it to stay ahead of powerhouse competitors, including Texas Instruments and Broadcom. www.rustreport.com.au

BlueStar employs Bluetooth technology to enable Bluetooth enabled devices, such as mobile phones or PDAs to identify their location without giving away that location, thus maintaining the device's privacy.

BlueStar involves several hardware and software components; including

  • special build Bluetooth beacons that advertise their location
  • a database of beacons and their associated locations for uploading onto a mobile device for identifying a beacon's location
  • technology that uses the database, "sniffs out" the nearest beacon and identifies the device's location, then allowing the sourcing of information based on knowing that location
